Charleston Police Department opens first DNA laboratory in the Lowcountry
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)– A new DNA laboratory will provide in-house DNA processing to the Charleston Police Department.
This will enhance forensic capabilities and enable investigators to more quickly identify perpetrators, process rape kits, and bypass the backlog in state-level facilities.
“This innovation within our police department is an investment in our public safety and a firm commitment to our residents. By shortening turnaround times and expanding our forensic capabilities locally, we are empowering our officers with the resources they need to make our neighborhoods safer and our investigations stronger,” said Mayor William Cogswell for the City of Charleston.
The facility has been years in the making and is credited by the American National Standards Institute Accreditation Board for meeting rigorous, internationally recognized standards for forensic testing. Officials said it will change law enforcement in the Lowcountry for years.
“This is truly a monumental day for the city of Charleston or the Charleston police department but for our entire region. The grand opening of our DNA laboratory is a game changer with efficiency and how we service public safety for the community of Charleston,” said Chito Walker, the Chief of the Charleston Police Department.
The department’s new lab will only provide testing and analysis for the city of Charleston initially, but officials hope to expand service to neighboring law enforcement agencies in the future.
