McMaster to address state’s efforts to combat dog fighting
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – Governor Henry McMaster and the head of South Carolina’s top law enforcement agency are expected to provide an update Monday on the state’s efforts to combat dog fighting.
Gov. McMaster and State Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel will be joined by state and local law enforcement agencies for a press conference at SLED’s Forensics Services Laboratory in Columbia.
McMaster called for an end to the cruel practice during his eighth State of the State address in January.
“Animal fighting, especially dog fighting, is one of the cruelest criminal activities in our society,” the governor said. “Law officers estimate that most of the people participating in this barbaric activity have long criminal records.”
His executive budget requested $500,000 in recurring funds to support operating costs associated with caring for confiscated animals.
The news conference is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
