Charleston fire station temporarily closes again due to mold
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston Fire Department has once again closed Station 12 on Old Towne Road after mold was discovered inside the building.
Firefighters are being relocated until testing is completed.
This marks the second time CFD closed Station 12 over mold concerns. A mold test came back positive in December 2024, and the city’s facilities and capital projects department and contractors worked to address the issue earlier this year.
Firefighters moved back into the building in early March; however, the crew is again being relocated to Station 11 on Savannah Highway following a review by the department’s safety officer and the city safety officer.
City officials will work with the fire department to review the problem and determine the best plan of action. There is no work on the timeframe for correcting the problem.
“Our team will remain in West Ashley and in the same general service area,” said Fire Chief Dan Curia, “As we continue to maintain fire and medical coverage with a combination of our resources and support through the agreements with our automatic-aide partners. The city will work hard to quickly review the situation and identify the needed corrections to protect our team.”
Residents should know that the station will not be staffed until the facility has been cleaned and any identified remediation efforts and repairs are implemented.
