Firefighters battled second brush fire in Huger area this weekend

HUGER, S.C. (WCBD) – Fire crews battled a large brush fire in the Huger area Sunday afternoon, the second incident in the rural Berkeley County community in as many days.

Officials with the Cainhoy Fire Department said its crews were dispatched to an address off United Drive around 3:45 p.m. for a “wildland fire.”

Crews reported heavy smoke coming from the area as they arrived and requested help from area partners.

“Upon arrival, Chief 2502 reported a large working brush fire with no immediate structural exposures. Crews worked to contain the fire and ensure that no structures became threatened,” the agency said.

A forestry plow was brought in to secure a containment line. The fire was brought under control after burning roughly five acres of land.

Officials say the cause was undetermined after an investigation. Firefighters cleared the scene at 5:10 p.m.

A person was given a fine Saturday after an illegal burn sparked a brush fire off Saint Irving Drive. About twenty acres of land burned during that incident.

An outdoor burn ban has been in effect for every South Carolina county since Friday evening due to an increased risk of wildfire. Gov. Henry McMaster also declared a state of emergency over the weekend due to a massive fire still underway at Table Rock in Pickens County.
