Moncks Corner railroad crossing reopens after deadly March 12 crash
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – A railroad crossing damaged during a deadly train versus vehicle crash has reopened following repairs.
Altman Street in Moncks Corner has been closed in both directions since the March 12 collision that involved a Volvo and Amtrak passenger train.
A representative from CSX told News 2 shortly after the incident that equipment was heavily damaged and the crossing would be closed while repairs were made.
Berkeley County officials said the crossing was reopened as of Saturday morning.
Videos from the Amtrak and nearby security cameras on the night of that crash revealed several vehicles going around the safety bars as the Amtrak approached while blowing its horn.
A white Volvo driven by 59-year-old William Foster attempted to drive around the stop bar but collided with the Amtrak train on the driver’s side around 7:20 p.m. Mr. Foster died on the scene as a result.
A 15-year-old girl who was riding in the front passenger seat was critically injured and taken to the hospital.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
