Developments could soon be underway at former Georgetown steel mill
GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD)–Changes could soon be underway at the site of the former Georgetown Liberty Steel Mill. This came after officials sat down with a potential buyer last week.
A year ago, crews stopped operations at the old steel mill on the corner of Front and Fraiser Street in Georgetown, but officials said this space could soon be taken up by housing, green space, and much more. The mill was established in the 1960s and generated millions of dollars for decades until it shut down last year. Since then, the site has been vacant, but officials hope to make it a vibrant place for the community.
Officials said the anonymous buyers want to improve the lives of residents and bring more opportunities to people in the Waterfront District. Georgetown Mayor Carol Jayroe told News 2 that it could be a significant economic hub for the community, especially after losing several big employers in recent years.
“Retail, restaurants, housing, and light industry. There’s a whole plethora of things that will bring jobs… to our city. We are in dire need of employment after losing Liberty Steel and then losing the International Paper Company, so it’s a breath of fresh air for the city receiving news like this,” said Carol Jayroe,” the city mayor of Georgetown.
There is no word on when the buyer or officials will have another discussion on the future of this site, but leaders say plans are in the works, and they will release more information in the coming months.
