Summerville man killed in I-526 hit-and-run, police locate vehicle involved

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Officers with the North Charleston Police Department have located the vehicle and driver involved in a hit-and-run collision on the Don Holt Bridge Monday morning.

The driver is cooperating with the department’s traffic unit, and an investigation is ongoing, said Harve Jacobs, spokesperson for North Charleston PD.

According to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office, 56-year-old William Bennett of Summerville died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Police responded to the eastbound lanes of I-526 over the bridge around 7:45 a.m. for reports of a collision.

When they arrived, they discovered the driver of a disabled 18-wheeler had “stepped off or fell backward” from the door of his truck when he was struck by a passing vehicle. That vehicle then left the scene.

The truck driver, identified as Bennett, was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The crash happened at the North Rhett Avenue exit, and officials rerouted traffic to Virginia Avenue.
