Driver of disabled 18-wheeler was struck and killed in I-526 hit-and-run
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The driver of an 18-wheeler was struck and killed Monday morning on the Don Holt Bridge.
Officers with the North Charleston Police Department responded to the eastbound lanes of the Don Holt Bridge around 7:45 a.m., where they learned that the diver of a disabled tractor-trailer “stepped off or fell backward” off the step of the driver’s side door of his truck.
He was then struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, officials said. The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the crash happened at the North Rhett Ave. exit, which snarled traffic during the Monday morning commute.
Traffic was being rerouted at Virginia Ave.
An investigation is ongoing. The individual will be identified by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office when appropriate.
All lanes on the Don Holt Bridge have since reopened.
