1 dead, 1 hospitalized after vehicle and Amtrak train collide in Moncks Corner
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – One person died Wednesday night following a train and vehicle collision in Moncks Corner.
Around 7:20 p.m., authorities responded to reports of a collision at the train tracks on Altman Street. When they arrived, they discovered an Amtrak train had collided with a vehicle.
One man believed to be the driver of the vehicle died on the scene. The passenger of the vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Berkeley County Coroner Darnel Hartwell said that the individual is in stable condition.
Officials said it is currently unclear whether the train arms were down at the time of the collision. Law enforcement plan to use surveillance video from nearby businesses to uncover exactly what happened.
Altman Street is closed until further notice while crews investigate. Officials estimated that the area could be shut down until at least Thursday morning but could be longer.
The Amtrak was traveling from Florence to Charleston. The Berkeley County School District is providing buses to take the Amtrak passengers to their destination.
Several first response agencies are working the scene, including the Moncks Corner Police Department, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Moncks Corner Fire Department, Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, and SCDOT.
