Sister of U.S. Supreme Court Justice targeted with bomb threat at Charleston home
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The sister of a U.S. Supreme Court Justice was targeted with a bomb threat at her Charleston home earlier this week, according to local police.
Officers with the Charleston Police Department responded on March 10 to a reported bomb threat received by Amanda Coney Williams, Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s sister, at her West Ashley residence.
The road was closed for some time as first responders inspected the home’s mailbox. The threat was later determined to be a false alarm.
Williams’s husband, David, told police that the threat had been sent via email shortly before 11 p.m. the previous night.
According to a police report, the email read:
“Using a 1×8-inch threaded galvanized pipe, end caps, a kitchen timer, some wires, metal clips and homemade black powder, I’ve constructed a pipe bomb which I recently placed in Amy Coney Barrett’s sister’s mailbox at her home at [redacted] Charleston, SC. The device`s detonation will be triggered as soon as the mailbox is next opened. Free Palestine!”
The report stated that David said he did not know who might be targeting the household, but an unknown person had delivered pizza to every home related to Justice Barrett during the evening of March 8.
No arrests have been made, an FBI spokesperson told News 2 in a March 12 statement.
The investigation is ongoing.
