Local sales tax changes coming to Georgetown, Williamsburg counties May 1
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – Georgetown and Williamsburg counties will soon see changes to local sales tax.
South Carolina’s Department of Revenue said Tuesday new local sales and use taxes will take effect in five of the state’s 46 counties beginning May 1.
SCDOR officials said the statewide Sales and Tax is 6%; however, counties can impose an additional 1% local sales tax if voters in that county approve.
Georgetown County is adding a new Capital Projects Tax – the sales tax rate will increase to 7%.
The sales tax will fund 22 voter-approved capital projects across the county, including water and sewer projects in rural areas, and a new emergency operations center. The county’s 1% Capital Project Sales Tax will be in place for eight years. You can learn more by clicking here.
Meanwhile, the 1% Capital Projects Tax in Williamsburg County is set to expire on April 30, which means the county’s sales tax rate will decrease to 7%.
Tax changes are also anticipated in Horry, Jasper, and Sumter counties.
