Man, 56, accused of stealing Colleton County license plate reader
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A man is facing felony charges after authorities in Colleton County recovered a stolen license plate reader.
The camera, which is part of a newly launched “Colleton County Safe” program, was reported stolen on March 4. Witnesses said two men wearing traffic safety vests were seen removing the camera.
Timothy McWilliams, 56, was identified as one of the suspects. He is being charged with felony grand larceny, and additional arrests are expected.
Officials said the equipment is used to help law enforcement reduce and solve crimes, recover stolen vehicles, and locate missing or endangered people.
“They help us solve violent crimes such as homicides and shooing and assist in finding missing persons. We will not tolerate interference with this vital public safety resource,” said Colleton County Sheriff Buddy Hill.
According to the agency, the cameras are installed on private property throughout the county under official agreements. They said that tampering with or stealing the cameras is a serious offense. “Offenders will be held accountable including facing criminal charges and potential restitution,” said CCSO.
An investigation is ongoing, and authorities say an additional arrest is likely.
