One person exposed to rabid fox in Williamsburg County
WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – At least one person is seeking medical care after being exposed to a rabid fox in a Williamsburg County community.
The South Carolina Department of Health said the fox was found near Gowdys Lane and Spring Road in Lake City.
It was submitted to the state health agency’s laboratory for testing on Feb. 18 and was confirmed to have rabies the following day.
The exposed individual was referred to their healthcare provider. State health officials said anyone who believes they came into contact with the fox should contact the DPH’s Conway office by calling 843-915-8801 during regular business hours.
“To reduce the risk of getting rabies, always give wild and stray animals plenty of space,” said Terri McCollister, Rabies Program director. “If you see an animal in need, avoid touching it and contact someone trained in handling animals, such as your local animal control officer, wildlife control operator, or wildlife rehabilitator.”
