City of North Charleston announces redevelopment of former Exit 218

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of North Charleston is scheduled to announce redevelopment plans for former Exit 218 on Tuesday morning.

Former Exit 218 was abandoned by SCDOT after completing the Port Access Road and later transferred to the City of North Charleston. The announcement on Tuesday is expected to highlight the redevelopment of the site.

According to city officials, North Charleston secured an $11.4 million grant by working with the grant’s lead applicant, the Sustainability Institute.

$6.8 million will fund the development of affordable housing at the site transforming it into a safe and accessible community. The city further stated that $2.8 million of the grant will fund the repairs, weatherization, and upgrade of the efficiency of 50 existing homes in the community.

“This project will reknit the community once divided by highway development and aligns with the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance its cultural and historical significance, improve public spaces, and foster community engagement,” said officials with the city.

The event will take place at the former Exit 218 off Spruill Ave on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m.

Mayor Burgess will be joined by city council members, representatives from the Sustainability Institute, and other community stakeholders to share updates on this project.
