VIDEO: Charleston driver charged for ‘reckless snowstorm stunt,’ police say
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A driver who performed “donuts” on an ice-covered roadway in downtown Charleston is facing charges for what police called a “reckless snowstorm stunt”.
The Charleston Police Department said it was made aware of a video circulating on social media that showed a vehicle driving recklessly at the intersection of Meeting and Broad Streets the day after snow and ice fell across the area.
Officers reviewed security video from the intersection and observed a white Toyota FJ Cruiser performing the stunt while a news crew filmed from the sidewalk.
Video provided by the police department shows the vehicle narrowly avoiding several pedestrians, including a person walking their dog, and other cars at the intersection. The incident kicked up snow and ice on the pedestrians.
Police said it also came close to the columns at St. Michael’s Church.
An investigation led officers to Clinton Larrabee, 21, of Charleston who was charged with reckless driving.
“Last week’s snowstorm brought rare and exciting moments to the Lowcountry, but it also highlighted the importance of responsible driving, especially in hazardous conditions,” the Charleston Police Department said.
“Snow and ice do not negate traffic laws, nor do they excuse dangerous driving behaviors. If anything, these conditions demand heightened responsibility behind the wheel,” the department added.
Police said the excitement of a rare snowfall should never outweigh the importance of roadway safety.
