Woman saves North Charleston toddler who fell into icy pond

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A woman is being hailed as a hero after jumping into an icy pond to save a toddler.

After snow fell across the Lowcountry, a family in the Lakes subdivision was outside enjoying the snow day when their 3-year-old daughter followed several older boys to a nearby pond that was partially frozen.

The North Charleston Police Department said the young girl, Mira, got onto the ice before anyone could stop her, and the ice broke under her weight.

She dropped into the freezing water.

A woman, Heather Britt, who was there with her son, saw Mira fall into the water and without hesitation jumped in to save the girl.

The agency said Mira’s father ran to them and pulled his daughter and Heather from the water. The child was taken inside to be dried and warmed up.

Neighbors helped the family connect with Heather so that they could thank her for saving their daughter.

“Heather, NCPD thanks you for your quick and heroic actions,” the department said.
