Ice creates hazardous road conditions Thursday morning
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Snow and sleet that fell this week re-froze overnight Thursday amid very cold temperatures. The layer of ice, which can be hard to see, has created hazardous road conditions.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation said its crews are in the Lowcountry working to treat ice on the roads. The department said there are still patches of ice on roads, specifically in neighborhoods and secondary streets.
If you are traveling, you are encouraged to drive slowly and cautiously.
Temperatures were in the low 20s Thursday morning with even lower wind chills. “If the road temperature and the air temperature get below 32 degrees, you have that issue called black ice,” said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Grace Lowe. “We certainly don’t see this a lot in the Lowcountry, and this is why we are asking you to stay home and take caution. It’s transparent, you really cannot see it.”
Driving safety tips:
- Accelerate and decelerate slowly
- Do not use cruise control in slick conditions
- If you start sliding, gently let off the gas pedal and steer in the same direction
- Avoid sudden moves like hard braking and sudden gear changes
