WARMING CENTERS: Where people without adequate heat can seek shelter

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Arctic air will move into the Lowcountry this week bringing with it a possibility of frozen precipitation.

High temperatures will be in the 30s with lows in the 20s, and wind chills – that feel-like temperature – could dip into the single digits.

The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a cold weather advisory through Wednesday afternoon. Forecasters say frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these very cold temperatures.

People without adequate heat, and those experiencing homelessness, can seek shelter from the frigid temperatures at one of several warming centers this week.

NORTH CHARLESTON
Holy City Missions Winter Warming Shelter (1444 Remount Road)

Guests will have a safe place to sleep and be given a hot meal, breakfast, and lunch bag. A hot shower, warm clothes, and toiletries are available. Families are welcome, but pets are not allowed.

Monday and Tuesday – registration is open between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., and closes at 7 a.m. the following morning.

For a connecting ride to the shelter, guests can board a CARTA bus for route 13 and request the Aldersgate Winter Warming Shelter. 

SUMMERVILLE
Seacoast Church Summerville Warming Center (301 E. 5^th N. Street)

Guests will be provided a cot with linens and a pillow, a warm dinner, a takeaway breakfast, and a hot shower. Men, women, and families are welcome; however, they cannot accommodate pets.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday – 7 p.m. until 7 a.m.

The warming center’s entrance and bus stop are located at the backdoor facing Gum Street.

WALTERBORO
Walterboro Warming Center (907 Wichman Street – in the Skardon Hall building)

The center will welcome men, women, and families who need a warm place to stay or sleep.

It will be open from January 20 through January 26 from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. each day

Pets cannot be accommodated, and transportation will not be provided.

WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY
Williamsburg County Recovery Center (Thurgood Marchall Highway)

The shelter will be open beginning Monday, Jan. 20 from 7 p.m. until 8 a.m. until further notice.
