Schools announce schedule changes due to winter weather

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – School districts are adjusting their schedules this week due to anticipated winter weather.

Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are forecast for most of the Lowcountry on Tuesday and Wednesday, which could cause slick roadways and travel problems. Temperatures are forecast to be in the 30s with overnight lows in the 20s. Wind chills will make temperatures feel much lower.

BERKELEY COUNTY

The Berkeley County School District will have a half-day dismissal Tuesday and students will have an eLearning day Wednesday. All schools and offices will be closed Wednesday.

After-school care programs, activities, and athletics, including practices and games, are canceled from Tuesday, January 21 through Wednesday, January 22.

“If you are a parent or guardian of a bus rider, we encourage you to transport your child(ren), if possible, Tuesday afternoon following the half-day dismissal,” the district said. “This will allow for buses to be utilized primarily by those who do not have any other transportation option and allow our bus drivers to complete routes more efficiently prior to the onset of the wintry weather.”

The district said specific information about assignments will be provided by the student’s teacher and/or school. Students will complete assignments via Schoology or SeeSaw.

CHARLESTON COUNTY

The district will then shift to eLearning and remote work on Wednesday. All school and district buildings will be closed for the day.

“Your child’s teacher or school will provide specific instructions to ensure a smooth transition to eLearning, including access to necessary materials and resources,” the district said.

Children who need assistance with eLearning tools or platforms can contact the district’s IT Help Desk at (843) 308-8181 for support.

“We will continue to monitor weather conditions later in the week and will communicate any needed operational changes as soon as possible,” the district said.

All afterschool activities are canceled.

Students will receive information from their school and teachers regarding eLearning assignments and due dates.
