Double fatality crash on US 17 near Sangaree Parkway
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a double fatality crash on US 17A early Monday morning.
The crash occurred on US 17 approximately 2 miles north of Summerville at approximately 3:36 a.m., according to Corporal Nick Pye of the SCHP.
Troopers say a 2018 Volkswagen and a 2016 GMC were both traveling south on US 17 when a 2013 Buick traveling north on US 17 in the southbound lane struck the Volkswagen head-on. The GMC then struck the Volkswagen in the rear.
One victim was confirmed dead at the scene and another victim was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office was notified around 4:34 a.m.
The coroner’s office has identified Ms. Brianna Barnum, 28, of St. Stephen, as the sole occupant of a 2018 Volkswagen. She was pronounced dead at the scene from fatal injuries sustained in the crash.
Officials also identified Ms. Miriam Frausto, 36, of North Charleston, as the sole occupant of a 2013 Buick Enclave. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased from fatal injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver of the GMC was not injured.
Berkeley County EMS, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol and Pine Ridge Fire & Rescue responded to the incident.
