Bitterly cold, possible winter precipitation this week
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Bitterly cold temperatures will move into southeast South Carolina next week, and the chances for some type of winter precipitation are increasing.
Low temperatures could reach near record levels Wednesday night with dangerous wind chills possible Tuesday night into Wednesday night.
“Confidence is increasing, as well as concern for possible icing on Tuesday morning, and again Tuesday evening,” said Storm Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler.
As an area of low pressure passes to the south and offshore by the middle of next week, it will collide with those very cold temperatures and could bring winter precipitation to the area. Fowler said the track of the surface low will be key to what kind and how much precipitation we see.
“The probabilities for accumulating winter precipitation impacting the area continue to increase, but it is still too soon to pin down specific impacts and amounts,” said Fowler. “The window of greatest impacts looks to be Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.”
If we see any kind of icing, snow, or sleet, travel issues could continue Wednesday night into Thursday as wet roads refreeze.
