Winter weather is possible next week. What kind, how much, if any is still undetermined

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – There has been a lot of chatter about whether the Lowcountry will experience any winter weather next week. One thing we know for certain right now is that it will be very cold.

Arctic air will fill in by Tuesday with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s. Wind chills – that feels like temperature – could reach as low as the single digits for many.

Storm Team 2 is tracking a developing storm in the Gulf that could provide an interesting forecast by Tuesday and Wednesday; however, more time is needed to study what impacts, if any, we may see and feel.

“If we get things to line up just perfectly, we could be talking about the potential for winter weather,” said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph. “We’re watching an area of high pressure off to our north and west. If it ends up being too strong and it suppresses our storm system, all the moisture, if it stays offshore, then we’re just cold and dry. But if the area of low pressure expected to develop in the Gulf tracks right to our south, we could be dealing with the possibility of winter weather.”

Christoph said if it tracks too far to our north, we’ll likely just see cold rain.

“The timing and the track of this storm system will be critical, at five days out, there’s a lot of details to resolve here,” he said.

BOTTOM LINE:

  • Active weather is likely next week
  • Winter weather probability is rising

For now, our team is tracking trends. Christoph said once we get closer, things will become a little clearer, especially this weekend.
