Overnight fire burns vacant Huger Street building

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A vacant and deteriorating building on Huger Street caught fire early Sunday morning. The cause is under investigation.

Charleston County 911 received multiple calls reporting smoke in the area of Congress and Huger Street just after 1 a.m.

Charleston Fire Department and assisting agencies responded and found a single-story, single-family home near the end of Huger Street with smoke coming from all sides.

Crews worked to extinguish flames inside the vacant building while protecting nearby structures.

“The fire was brought under control within twenty minutes of their arrival, with the damage confined to the original structure,” said Charleston Fire officials.

Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s office examined the scene. Officials said the building had previously been marked unsafe because of its deteriorating condition, so the investigation was stopped overnight due to safety concerns.

No injuries were reported.
