Early voting opens Monday for SC House District 113 special election primary

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Voters in the North Charleston area will head to the polls this month to decide which Democrat will run unopposed in a March special election to fill an open South Carolina House seat.

Three women — Michelle Brandt, Kim Clark, and Courtney Waters — are seeking the Democratic nomination for House District 113, which covers much of North Charleston and a small portion of Summerville.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21, but eligible voters can cast a ballot early over the next two weeks. Early voting begins Monday, Jan. 6, and ends Friday, Jan. 17.

Voters registered within the district can vote without an excuse at the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections Headquarters (4340 Corporate Road) from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. during the early voting period.

Early voting is not available on Saturdays or Sundays.

South Carolina does not require registration by political party and holds open primaries, meaning any voter can choose to participate in the Democratic primary.

The special election is scheduled for March 25.

It comes after former Rep. Marvin Pendarvis resigned from the legislature last September amid an ongoing investigation into his law practice.

He won reelection on Nov. 5 but indicated the day after the election that he would not accept the seat.
