Man wanted for King Street assault arrested in North Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities have identified a man accused in a downtown assault.

Officers with the Charleston Police Department responded to a reported assault near King and Hutson Streets shortly after midnight on December 14.

According to police, the victims said the suspect struck them with an unknown object after an argument. The victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the attack.

In an update Tuesday, police said the suspect was identified as 32-year-old Joseph Michael Whitehurst of Raleigh, North Carolina. He is being charged with two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a knife during the commission of a violent crime.

Whitehurst was taken into custody by the US Marshals Task Force in North Carolina and is awaiting extradition.
