Suspect shot by Summerville homeowner during attempted burglary, police say
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – A man was shot early Friday while trying to break into a Summerville home.
Officers with the Summerville Police Department were sent to a home in the Weatherstone subdivision just before 9 a.m. Friday for a report of a man attempting to forcibly enter an occupied home.
The homeowner escaped the residence with her child and went to a neighbor’s house for safety.
Police say the suspect then went to the neighbor’s home and attempted to force his way into that resident. The suspect, who was holding a burglary tool, was confronted by the homeowner, who was armed with a handgun.
“The homeowner shot the suspect in an extremity, as he was in fear for his and the neighbor’s safety, and he was protecting his home,” police said.
Officials say the suspect suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and ran from the scene. He was apprehended by officers on Delafield Drive minutes later. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and will be booked at the Berkeley County Detention Center once released.
Richard Dezmond Maybank, 27, faces two counts of attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools.
The homeowners were injured, and police say the homeowner who shot the suspect will not be charged.
