Smoke prompts evacuation at Colleton County school
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Smoke caused Students and staff to be evacuated from a Colleton County elementary school.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue crews responded to a report of smoke and a burning smell in the ceiling of the breakroom at Hendersonville Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon.
The school is located on Hendersonville Highway in Walterboro.
Students and staff were evacuated as a precaution. They were taken to an area of the school that is separate from where the smoke was seen to keep them out of bad weather.
Colleton County fire crews isolated the situation to a roof mounted HVAC unit. There was no significant property damage and no injuries were reported, Colleton Fire said.
Students and staff were escorted back inside shortly after.
