NCPD responds to fatal officer-involved shooting on Cherokee St.
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The North Charleston Police Department responded Friday to a fatal officer-involved shooting on Cherokee Street, according to a statement shared on social media.
According to North Charleston Police, the incident occurred around 3:34 p.m. when an off-duty officer working at the CARTA Bus Station at Rivers and Cosgrove avenues was alerted by patrons about a man reportedly waving around a firearm.
The suspect, described as wearing a black hat and brown jacket, prompted the officer to notify dispatch and request backup.
Two officers located the individual on Cherokee Street, where he allegedly pointed a weapon at them. In response, the officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect.
Officers immediately administered aid, but despite their efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the incident.
