CSX coal train partially derails in Williamsburg County

GREELEYVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Crews responded to a CSX coal train that partially derailed near the Greeleyville area overnight.

Officials with the Williamsburg County Fire Department said 38 cars left the track shortly after midnight and will need to be replaced and the tracks repaired before the scene is cleared.

Fire officials said the train cars were empty and no injuries or spills were reported.

“CSX and its contractors will be using the north bound lane of US Hwy 521 between Pine Tree Street and Sippio Road to replace the cars and repair the tracks,” fire officials said.

Williamsburg County Sheriff Stephen Gardner and Fire Chief Randy Swinton provided images of the detailed cars.

Traffic cones will be in place and one south bound travel lane will be used to keep vehicles morning near the work. People are asked to use a different route and use caution in the area.

A timeline for the repairs was not provided.
