Coastal flooding impacts Charleston and Colleton roadways
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A Coastal Flood Warning is in place for parts of Charleston and Colleton Counties through 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Coastal flooding is now affecting Charleston roadways as tide levels in Charleston Harbor have exceeded the major flood stage of 8 feet. Storm Team 2 predicts 1 to 2 feet of standing water in areas prone to flooding.
The National Weather Service says major flooding will likely occur along the coast of Charleston and Colleton Counties.
Cars are seen driving through standing water near the Ashley River bridge around 6:30 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service, road closures are expected in Downtown Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, and Edisto Beach.
Officials report tide levels are peaking just above 10.2 ft at Fort Pulaski. Roadways along the back side of Tybee Island and Darien are likely flooded.
If roadways are closed, officials urge drivers to never drive around police barricades and to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”
According to Josh Marthers, the vast majority of the Lowcountry is not expected to see any flooding. However, passing showers are expected.
