Flooding continues along Edisto River

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Dorchester County activated its emergency operations center Monday amid flooding along the Edisto River.

While flooding has not been significant at this point in Dorchester County, rescue crews are stationed along the river and a command center is prepped for use at the Givhans Fire Department.

Meanwhile, many roads were closed in Colleton County because of flooding and several evacuations took place for river residents over the weekend.

“We started on November 7. We started to share some stuff on our social media account just saying hey everybody be alert; the flooding is coming. You know, Orangeburg had some devastating impacts,” said KC Campbell, Colleton County’s public information officer

Those floodwaters are now briskly moving into Colleton County. Some residents were seen using kayaks and other boats to get to and from their homes.

One man said he just bought his home four months ago, and that it came with a boat.

The river flooding crest is expected to reach about 15.5 feet, which is above the flood stage.

A shelter is open at the Colleton County Recreation Center in Walterboro. You can bring your pets to the shelter, along with comfort items.

“Leave. Don’t wait until the nighttime to leave. Do it now while it’s nice and daylight out. Because it’s so much more difficult for responders to get in and out it’s much safer for everybody involved now, so again the time to leave is now. The shelter’s open, they’re ready and they’re waiting.”
