2 candidates vying to become the next Dorchester County sheriff

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Sheriff L.C. Knight is set to retire, and a new sheriff will soon be sworn into office. But voters in Dorchester County will first decide between two candidates.

Democratic candidate Charles Frederick, a former Dorchester County captain, spent part of his day at the Marcia O’Brien Conference Center in Summerville greeting voters, and the department’s chief deputy and Republican candidate, Sam Richardson voted at Miles Road Baptist Church this morning.

Both men say they are looking forward to seeing who the voters picked – both say they are very qualified to be sheriff.

“I’ve been working in law enforcement my whole life; 25 years on the South Carolina Highway Patrol as a state trooper – I was a corporal. I came to Dorchester County as a lieutenant promoted to captain,” said Frederick.

“I care about our county,” said Richardson. “I’m the best-prepared candidate – I’m a commissioned officer in the United States Army, and I’ve had command opportunities there from across the country. I’ve had the opportunity inside the sheriff’s office to rise to the level from a deputy on the streets to chief deputy sheriff.”

The winner of the election will serve a four-year term.
