South Carolina Representatives call for enhanced polling location security

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – South Carolina Representatives Wendell Gilliard and Gilda Cobb-Hunter formally requested increased security at polling locations across the state on Sunday, addressing a letter to Howard Knapp, Executive Director of the South Carolina State Election Commission.

The appeal follows a recent video incident involving a Trump supporter who refused to remove campaign items from a restricted area and subsequently threatened and intimidated poll workers. The lawmakers argue that such behavior not only compromises the integrity of the electoral process but also endangers the safety of voters and poll workers.

Gilliard stated, “I believe it is essential for our state to ensure a safe environment for all citizens engaging in the democratic process.”

“By collaborating with local law enforcement and implementing robust security measures, we can protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that every voter can exercise their right without fear of intimidation,” added Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter. 

The letter from Gilliard and Cobb-Hunter includes specific security recommendations, such as increasing law enforcement presence at polling sites and establishing clear boundaries for campaign activities.

Rep. Gilliard remains dedicated to protecting the rights of both voters and poll workers and is urging community leaders to support these necessary steps to ensure safe and secure elections across South Carolina.
