Former South Carolina State student charged with attempted murder following shooting

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – State law enforcement has charged a former South Carolina State University student for firing into a crowd of his peers.

Melvin Anthony Williams, 21, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime on Oct. 24 by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the agency said.

SC State police requested SLED investigate following the shooting.

Williams allegedly fired into a crowd of students on campus, striking one in the leg on Mar. 3, 2023, arrest warrants state.

The 1st Circuit Solicitors Office will prosecute the case against Williams. He was booked at the Orangeburg County jail.
