Groundbreaking for King and Huger St pump station

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of Charleston is holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the final phase of the King and Huger Street pump stations.

Officials say phase 2 of the Huger and King Street Drainage Improvements involves constructing a stormwater storage feature which includes a new pump station. The pump station is designed to enhance the capacity of the existing storm drains by relieving the current gravity system during significant storm-related events.

“It is anticipated that the pump station will increase flow out of the intersection by 70,000 gallons per minute and improve overall storage capacity,” said City of Charleston officials. “This development will alleviate congestion at the busy intersection and significantly reduce the flooding impacts that have historically occurred.”

According to the City of Charleston, construction is anticipated to last 18 months.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for Monday, October 28 at the corner of King and Huger St beginning at 10:30 a.m.

City leaders, including Mayor Cogswell, representatives from the City of Charleston Stormwater Department, City Councilman Robert Mitchell, the Charleston Housing Authority, project leaders, and SCRIA are expected to attend.
