Coroner identifies passenger killed after crash between two construction vehicles on Savannah Highway
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified Friday a man killed in a crash on Savannah Highway earlier this week.
Stanley Smith, 70, died at the Medical University of South Carolina after being injured when two construction vehicles collided near Briarcliff Drive around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Charleston County deputies say one of the vehicles was pulling a trailer with three people who were collecting traffic cones. The driver, Kendall Hawkins, made an illegal U-turn on Savannah Highway and collided with another vehicle.
The three passengers were ejected from the trailer onto the road, resulting in serious injuries. They were taken to the hospital for treatment; however, one of the passengers – now identified as Smith – died from their injuries.
Hawkins was charged with two counts of Felony Driving Under the Influence. The other driver, Rockarius King, was charged with one count of driving under the influence and one count of having an open container in a motor vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation.
