Restoration Unit opening at Al Cannon Detention Center
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office will host a ribbon cutting for a Restoration Unit at the Al Cannon Detention Center on Monday.
Officials say the Restoration Unit is designed to medically stabilize incarcerated individuals who have been declared incompetent to stand trial.
The Sheriff’s Office says once stabilization has been achieved, the individual will receive education on the criminal justice system.
“This will help with their case’s adjudication, bringing justice to themselves or their victims, and relieve the backlog of court cases,” said Charleston County Sheriff’s Office officials.
The Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, VitalCore Health Strategies, and the Medical University of South Carolina to develop the Restoration Unit.
