Deputies arrest man accused in Walterboro shooting that injured 9-year-old girl

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A man wanted in connection with the shooting of a 9-year-old girl in Walterboro has been arrested.

According to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, Brian Brookes Jr., 23, was located and taken into custody on Tuesday.

Deputies with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and Colleton County Fire Rescue crews were called to Buffalo Lane around 5:50 p.m. Sunday. The child’s mother told first responders that the young girl was inside the home when bullets struck her during a possible domestic dispute.

Officials said an argument between two adult men escalated when shots were fired outside. Bullets entered the home and struck the child.

The child, 9, was critically injured with wounds to the upper torso and her arm. She was eventually airlifted to MUSC for immediate care and remains in the ICU.

Brookes Jr was wanted by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature for firing his weapon toward the home while arguing with another male adult.

“His actions caused an innocent 9-year-old child to be struck by a bullet and suffer life-threatening injuries,” the sheriff’s office said.
