9th Annual Hope Walk Against Violence addresses domestic violence and breast cancer awareness

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Palmetto Hope Network is hosting the 9th Annual Hope Walk Against Violence on Saturday, September 14. This year’s event will focus on raising awareness about domestic violence in South Carolina and breast cancer, with new partner Hollings Cancer Center joining the cause.

Event Details:

• Date: Saturday, September 14, 2024
• Time: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
• Location: Starts on the Charleston side of the Ravenel Bridge and ends on the Mt. Pleasant side
• Speakers: Participants will gather at Saint Julian’s Divine Center, 1 Cooper Street, to hear speakers before the walk

Highlighting Domestic Violence

South Carolina ranks 6th in the nation for women killed by men, according to the 2021 “When Men Murder Women” report. The Palmetto Hope Network founder, Marlvis “Butch” Kennedy, emphasizes the urgent need for awareness, especially with domestic violence rates increasing post-COVID-19. “Our victims need your support now more than ever,” said Kennedy. The organization provides crisis intervention, safety planning, legal aid, and more, but with the closure of My Sister’s House shelter, resources are stretched thin.

Partnering for Breast Cancer Awareness

This year, the walk also raises awareness for breast cancer. Partner Hollings Cancer Center will provide support and information, highlighting the importance of community involvement in addressing both domestic violence and breast cancer.

Supporting Survivors

Proceeds from ticket sales and t-shirt purchases will benefit the Palmetto Hope Network, helping to provide emergency housing, food assistance, and other vital services to victims of domestic violence.
