Beaufort man accused in hit-and-run that injured bicyclist, deputies say

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston County deputies arrested a Beaufort man after he allegedly struck a bicyclist in August, injuring them, and then left the scene.

40-year-old Lawrence Elijah Doe Junior was charged with driving under suspension, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, hit and run with great bodily injury, driving left of the center, driver’s duties in a collision, and failing to exercise due care motor vehicle.

Doe hit the victim on Highway 78 in Ladson on Saturday, Aug. 10, just after 11 p.m. The victim was taken to Trident Medical Center when first responders arrived.

Investigators said they used witness descriptions of the vehicle and database data to determine that a silver pickup truck was involved.

A few days later, on Aug. 13, deputies conducted a traffic stop on the suspected vehicle and found Doe was driving under suspension and had a firearm in the truck.

Further investigation confirmed Doe was involved in the hit-and-run, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said.

He was booked at the Al Cannon Detention Center and given an $83,500 bond.
