Limited options available for uninsured homeowners impacted by Tropical Storm Debby
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Residents across the Lowcountry are facing even more challenges after Tropical Storm Debby, as some did not have a flood insurance policy in place. This means that their options for assistance may be limited.
Currently, federal assistance is unavailable for residents because individual assistance was not included under the emergency declaration approved for South Carolina.
While there could be potential for future assistance, it depends on the severity of damage in the area. That’s why leaders in counties impacted by this storm are asking residents to report any damage to officials.
Right now, teams from each impacted county are assessing the damage themselves, but they say residents play a big part in the process as well.
In Dorchester County, residents are encouraged to report their storm damage by calling (843)-832-0393 or filling out an online form. Berkeley County residents are also asked to report their damage online. In Charleston County, residents with structure damage or debris should report it here. Flood damage can be reported to [email protected] or (843)-202-6969.
Several non-profit organizations can also provide help to anyone with storm damage. Residents who need assistance can contact the American Red Cross by calling 1-800 RED CROSS. If help is needed with debris cleanup or removal, the non-profit Crisis Cleanup can be contacted at 1-844-965-1386.
As for future storms, insurance experts recommend this coverage for everyone in the Lowcountry. As of July 31, in Charleston County, there are 62,284 policies in force, according to the National Flood Insurance Program. There are 7,316 in Berkeley County and 3,059 in Dorchester County.
Federal leaders recommend this coverage because in most cases only flood insurance can financially protect property and belongings from a flood event. Just one inch of flood water in a home could cost around $25,000.
Residents can buy flood insurance by calling their insurance company or by contacting a local independent agent.
