BCSD shifts to virtual; urges staff to stay off roads
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – All extracurricular activities, athletics, and school programs are suspended Friday for the Berkeley County School District amid flash flooding associated with Tropical Storm Debby and heavy rainfall.
Numerous roads are closed and impassable, and swift water rescue crews were in the community assisting with getting people to safety.
While students in the county do not return to the classroom until August 14, the district and offices moved to virtual operations Friday, August 9. Staff was urged to stay off the roads.
“In collaboration with county and municipal leaders, BCSD will reassess conditions Friday and throughout the weekend and provide updates, as appropriate, concerning potential access to schools and offices,” the district said.
Berkeley Middle School is being used as a shelter.
“BCSD leaders are working closely with Berkeley County Emergency Management and are receiving regular updates about the weather from the National Weather Service. As safety and security is our number one priority, officials will continue to monitor the weather and assess any resulting damage,” the district added.
