Flooding prompts some downtown road closures on Friday afternoon

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Heavy rain associated with Friday afternoon thunderstorms has caused some roads in downtown Charleston to flood.

The National Weather Service in Charleston issued a flood advisory for the Charleston area until 6:15 p.m. Forecasters say minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas can be expected during the afternoon.

The NWS reported around 4:30 p.m. that 1.21 inches of rain had fallen within 20 minutes at The Citadel.

“Please avoid driving, and never drive through flooded streets or around barricades,” the City of Charleston said on its social media pages. “CPD will be closing off vulnerable intersections.”

As of 7:30 p.m., the following roads were closed:

  • Ashley Avenue between Calhoun Street and Bennett Street
  • Barre Street between Montagu Street and Beaufain Street
  • Bull Street between Barre Street and Gadsden Street
  • Gadsden Street at Bennett Street
  • Hasell Street at Meeting Street
  • Huger Street at King Street
