U.S. Secret Service director resigns after Mace moves to force an impeachment vote

WASHINGTON (WCBD)- U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) moved on Monday night to force a full House vote on impeaching the U.S. Secret Service director following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

This comes after the director, Kimberly Cheatle, was grilled by lawmakers over security failures at the July 13 rally that left Trump and two rallygoers injured and another rallygoer dead.

“Director Cheatle’s gross dereliction of duty since July 13th led to an unprecedented security breach and a preventable tragedy,” Mace said. “What we saw in today’s hearing was absolutely egregious.”

Mace filed the motion as privileged, which forces leadership to hold a vote within two legislative days.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisles grew frustrated during the Oversight Committee hearing, chiding Cheatle for failing to provide clear answers as to how the gunman gained access to the roof of the building he fired from and why it was not secured.

At one point, Mace told Cheatle, who was subpoenaed to appear in front of the committee, that she was “full of s—” and “being dishonest.”

“She failed to provide us with answers. She failed to tell us a timeline. She failed in every way imaginable,” Mace said in a statement, adding that Cheatle’s responses during the hearing “undermined the trust and confidence” in the Secret Service.

Both Democrats and Republicans, including several members of South Carolina’s congressional delegation, have joined calls for Cheatle to resign. She has indicated that she does not plan to leave her position.

“After today’s hearing– with the extreme lack of transparency and accountability, this impeachment resolution is a necessary step to hold her accountable for her actions,” Mace continued.
