Man killed in officer-involved shooting near Park Circle, coroner says

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County Coroner released the identity of a 34-year-old man killed in an officer-involved shooting near Park Circle Friday night.

Quentin Ravenel died at Trident Medical Center at 9:12 p.m. from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the shooting off of Alpha Street.

A North Charleston officer responded a the location on Braddock Avenue around 8 p.m. after receiving a report of a suspicious person who “was acting in an erratic manner and making incoherent statements,” according to police.

Police found the individual, identified as Ravenel, trying to enter a residence on Alpha Street. The responding officer tried to detain him, and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, Ravenel broke into the residence, where the homeowner confronted him with a firearm.

Shots were fired by both the homeowner and the officer, Have Jacobs, a North Charleston Police spokesperson, said.

Both the officer and Ravenel were injured. Ravenel was wounded during the shooting and died from his injuries at the hospital.

The officer was injured during the fight. Police have not provided an update on the officer’s condition.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating this incident. It is standard procedure for SLED to investigate officer-involved shootings in South Carolina.
