North Charleston begins search for next police chief

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A search is underway for North Charleston’s next police chief.

The position was formally posted on Monday, and the city has partnered with the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) to oversee the selection process.

Chief Greg Gomes announced earlier this year that he would retire from the position at the end of June, after only serving as the department’s leader for about a year.

Gomes has been with the North Charleston Police Department for 30 years.

While a national search will be conducted, North Charleston’s leaders said back in April that three of the department’s deputy chiefs will be allowed to apply and participate in the selection process.

Candidates have until July 22 to apply, according to the posting.
