Crews contain propane tanker leak that prompted small Sullivan’s Island evacuation
SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – A propane tanker leak that prompted a small evacuation on Sullivan’s Island early Monday has been secured, officials said.
Deputy Chief Monty Anders with the Sullivan’s Island Police Department said the driver of that propane truck flagged down an officer around 6:37 a.m. and reported the truck having a propane leak.
Crews were dispatched to the scene with help from assisting agencies including Charleston County Hazmat. Police initially said they were looking at evacuating a roughly half-mile radius as a precaution.
Town officials said the truck was not deemed an explosive hazard and evacuated a smaller radius of about one block near the scene.
The truck was attempting to deliver propane to a business behind Dunleavy’s Pub.
Law enforcement officials said Hazmat crews accessed the area and contained that leak. The truck has since been towed from the area and roads were reopened.
