1 person has died after Folly Beach incident Monday night
FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD) — Authorities responded to an incident on Folly Beach Monday night involving a missing person from North Carolina that is impacting traffic.
Folly Beach Public Safety says a BOLO was issued to the department at 8 p.m. Shortly after, officers located a vehicle matching the missing person’s vehicle description and conducted a traffic stop on W Ashley Avenue.
Sgt. Zach Halpern, spokesperson for Folly Beach Public Safety, said the driver of the vehicle exited with a firearm in their hand. Officers issued verbal commands to put down the gun, but the individual fired a self-inflicted gunshot wound and collapsed.
EMS and first responders immediately began life-saving measures. Charleston County EMS rushed the individual to the Medical University of South Carolina, where they died from their injuries. Sgt. Halpern said no officers discharged their weapons during this incident.
Authorities say W Ashley Ave is closed from the 500 block and will stay closed for several hours. The individual’s name will not be released at this time.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office and Folly Beach Public Safety are investigating this incident.
