ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) – Art and sand will collide Saturday when the annual Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting competition returns to Isle of Palms.

The event, now in its 35th year, invites people of all ages to craft impressive sand sculptures on Front Beach as part of Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto festival.

Organizers say the competition is free and open to anyone who wishes to show off their sand sculpting abilities. Participants can enter divisions based on age with prizes awarded to the top three in each category.

  • Children (ages 14 and under)
  • Young Adult (ages 15-20)
  • Family (at least one adult and one child or young adult)
  • Adult (ages 21 and older)

Individuals and teams can enter the competition; however, teams are limited to four people.

Sculptures will be judged based on the most creative, best architectural, and best in show overall.

This sculpture won Most Creative 1st place during the competition in 2022.

Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. on event day, and the competition happens from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on front beach. You can also register in advance by visiting the Isle of Palms Recreation Department or calling 843-886-8294.
