What to expect on the opening day of the Spoleto Festival

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Friday marks the opening weekend for the 48th Spoleto Festival USA.

Over 100 performances will happen across the peninsula during this 17-day festival, and it all begins Friday with a handful of events.

The first act of the Front Row Series takes place in the Cistern Yard on Friday at 9 pm. The Old Crow Medicine Show, a Grammy-winning string band is the first act for the Front Row Series. The act will include a variety of hit performances including the song ‘Wagon Wheel.’

Also on Friday at 7 pm at the Sottile Theatre, the world premiere opera Ruinous Gods is set to have its first festival performance. That opera is co-produced by Spoleto and examines the effects of displacement on migrants

Not to mention while Spoleto performances are happening, The Piccolo Spoleto festival will run throughout the same time highlighting a variety of local artists with outdoor art exhibits and musical events across the area.

The first big event to keep on your radar is the opening ceremony for the Spoleto festival, it’s set to begin Friday at 12 pm, Count on 2 for a live look at the event on News 2 Midday.
